Eth-Noh-Tec and the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) present “Salon! You’re On!” on Saturday, March 13, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Eth-Noh-Tec Studio, 977 S. Van Ness Ave. (between 21st and 20th streets), San Francisco (close to 24th Street BART Station).

This celebration of International Women’s Month will feature works-in-progress by AAWAA artists for “A Place of Her Own.” Be part of the incubation for the show, which will be presented in September. Featured artists are:

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the San Francisco Board of Education will consider a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Jill Wynns to name the High School for the Arts in honor of world-renowned local artist Ruth Asawa, a driving force behind the founding of the school in 1982.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the San Francisco Unified School District building, 555 Franklin between McAllister and Fulton. The resolution is expected to be discussed around 7 p.m.

BERKELEY — A lecture titled "Lord It's the Samurai: Socially Engaged Art and the Cultural Production of Orientalist Hysteria" will be given on Tuesday, March 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the UC Berkeley Institute for East Asian Studies’ Conference Room, 2223 Fulton St., sixth floor.

The event is sponsored by the Center for Japanese Studies.

Consul General Yasumasa Nagamine and his wife, Ayako, recently honored San Francisco-based storyteller Brenda Wong Aoki and composer/musician Mark Izu for 30 years of multicultural performances.

Aoki and Izu, who are married, have collaborated on productions inspired by everything from old Japanese ghost stories to contemporary Asian American issues. They started their own arts organization, First Voice, in 1995.

The Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) presents a demonstration by Hirokazu Kosaka, director of visual arts and curator of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) in Los Angeles, on the various ways to decorate a shikishi, a Japanese-style art board.

The event will be held on Monday, Dec. 14, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the JCCCNC, 1840 Sutter St. in San Francisco Japantown.

Offering a pleasant and enjoyable alternative to the holiday shopping experience, The Women's Building 31st annual Celebration of Craftswomen will be held the weekends of Nov. 28-29 and Dec. 5-6 at Herbst Pavilion at Fort Mason Center, Buchanan Street and Marina Boulevard in San Francisco.

BERKELEY — Lewis Suzuki, a well-known Japanese American watercolor artist, will show his work during the Berkeley Artisans Holiday Open Studios.

His studio, located at 2240 Grant St. (at Bancroft Way), will be open to the public for four weekends after Thanksgiving — Nov. 28-29, Dec. 5-6, Dec. 12-13, and Dec. 19-20 — from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

LAFAYETTE — Glass artwork by Kana Tanaka will be featured in the new Lafayette Library and Learning Center, which will have its ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m.

Tanaka's art will decorate the Children's Activity Deck, with some of her work inserted in the deck wall, attached on top of the trellis, as well as on the side of columns.

Tanaka, who grew up in Japan and later attended Rhode Island School of Design, credits her multicultural background for inspiring her work.

Artist Lucien Kubo is conducting a collage-making workshop, with "Inspire/Aspire" as the theme, on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 2 to 5 p.m. at SOMArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan St. (between 8th and 9th streets) in San Francisco.

"The Flip Side of Yoshi's," a Japanese cultural extravaganza, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Yoshi's SF, 1330 Fillmore St. (at Ellis) in San Francisco.

The event will connect the ancient culture of Japan and the modern world, Eastern and Western cultures, and the spiritual and material worlds.

Demonstrations will include calligraphy, tea ceremony, chabana (flower arrangement for tea ceremony), taiko drumming, a kimono fashion show, and a spiritual dance by Yoshi Akiba, the jazz club's co-founder and namesake.
